Sonu moved to Mumbai at the age of 18 to pursue his dream of becoming a playback singer. He trained under classical music maestro Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan, honing his skills and preparing for a successful career. Sonu's breakthrough came with the song "Accha Sila Diya" from the movie Bewafa Sanam (1995). However, it was the song "Sandese Aate Hain" from Border (1997) that catapulted him to stardom.
